Marketing Is Not a Hail Mary
Marketing is not a Hail Mary for a struggling business.
It’s not the emergency lever you pull when revenue drops or forecasts miss the mark.
It’s the engine that should’ve been running all along.
I’ve seen this pattern too many times: Businesses skip branding and consistent marketing during the growth phase. It’s viewed as an “extra cost,” something to come back to later when things slow down.
But then things do slow down. Operating costs rise. Forecasts get missed. Panic sets in. And suddenly, marketing becomes the silver bullet.
The truth is: Trust isn’t something you can build overnight.
It’s something you earn through consistent and intentional effort.
What Actually Sustains a Business
Markets shift. Competition increases. Every business hits a slow season eventually.
To weather those storms, you need more than a great product or a quick campaign.
What carries you through is a combination of:
- Your Brand – what people remember when they’re not buying
- Your Customer Experience – what makes them come back
- Your Decision-Making – how you respond with clarity, realism, and a willingness to adapt
As Jim Collins wrote in Good to Great:
“Good to great comes about by a cumulative process—step by step, action by action, decision by decision, turn by turn of the flywheel—that adds up to sustained and spectacular results.”
Marketing alone won’t save you if the rest of the business isn’t healthy. But when brand and customer trust are strong, you give yourself a foundation to adjust, refocus, and move forward.
That’s why marketing can’t be a Hail Mary. It has to be a consistent, long-term investment, not just in promotion, but in listening to your customers, understanding what they value, and keeping their experience at the center of how you operate.
Resilient businesses are built from the inside out, by leaders who are proactive, realistic, and intentional in how they show up every day.
A flashy new campaign can’t undo years of neglect. But a consistent investment in brand and service builds loyalty, and loyalty builds staying power.
What I Learned at Holtz Leather
Before Active8, I helped launch Holtz Leather as their first marketing employee. I later served as CEO to help the company navigate through some challenging times.
When we first launched Holtz online, we saw almost immediate success using digital channels like Google, Facebook, and Pinterest. Customers responded to our personalized leather gifts, and the business grew 60% year over year for the first four years.
But it wasn’t just the product. We reinvested in content, photography, video, social, email, and packaging. We emphasized great customer service, real people, thoughtful details, and making sure gifts arrived on time and made an impression.
We also shared the story of the Holtz family, how they nearly lost everything, started with a borrowed embroidery machine in their basement, and built a legacy brand from scratch. They even adopted five kids from Costa Rica as the business grew. Being open about the heart behind the company created deep relationships with customers.
That trust became essential.
About six years in, things got harder. The post-COVID world meant every boutique now had a website. Online competition intensified. We had invested aggressively, and cash flow was tight.
I’d love to say we never looked to marketing as a Hail Mary, but we did at first. We tried to increase revenue quickly to avoid cutting anything. Some of the campaigns worked. But the real reason we made it through?
We had built a brand people believed in, and a loyal customer base that came back when we needed them most. At one point, over 70% of our revenue came from returning customers, which is incredibly high for an ecommerce business
That brand gave us time to regroup. But we didn’t just ride it, we had to do the hard work too. Tighten operations. Reevaluate expenses. Adapt to a new landscape.
Because while marketing matters, it’s not a band-aid. It’s part of a larger, long-term strategy.
What We See at Active8
Now, at Active8, I’ve worked with a lot of businesses at different stages. Some have great products but no plan for how to get seen. Others wait until things are falling apart before they call us.
And then there are the hardest stories, businesses who come to us when they’re already losing money. They know they need marketing, but they’ve run out of room to invest. They need a fix, fast.
It’s not impossible to come back from that, but it takes more than just marketing. It takes a holistic strategy. Reallocating budget. Cutting costs. Rebuilding slowly. No agency can solve that with a viral post or ad campaign.
Marketing is not a miracle cure.
It’s momentum. And momentum is built, not bought.
If You’re Building, Keep Going
No matter where your business is right now, just starting, scaling fast, or trying to stabilize, we can help you build a marketing strategy that aligns with your long-term goals.
At Active8, we’re different from most agencies. Many of us have run businesses ourselves. We understand what it’s like to manage cash flow, make payroll, and decide where to invest. So yes, we know how to build brands and run smart campaigns, but we also understand the bigger picture.
We don’t sell quick fixes. We face challenges head-on. And we work to create real, lasting impact that moves the needle.
So if you’re ready to build something that lasts, reach out. We’d love to help.
